When We Speak is a film series for Google and UCL’s Centre for Digital Language Inclusion, exploring the impact of AI’s Language Gap and the need for more inclusive speech recognition.

Launched on World Day for Assistive Technology, the series follows pioneering work to build automatic speech recognition for people with slurred or difficult-to-understand speech. Filmed in Ghana, the films capture intimate portraits of people whose voices are too often categorised as “noise” by standard technology.
